>>>Not likely, at least at the reward stage of the process.

<<Not sure what you are getting at. Could you elaborate?

It's a response to the phrase you used, "prizes to be reaped."

A pioneering spirit, the idea that we struggle in an adventurous manner to develop value where it did not previously exist, helped Americans create assets and wealth. I don't think it has been the will of the people to have assets spent away as bargaining chips, but we no longer have an enviable education system, excellence in business and industry, prestige in diplomatic affairs, or even that union of pioneering spirit. I would venture to say the points at which we know longer feel genuinely represented as individuals are the points at which something is being reaped, and the reaping has been going on for so long it probably does not even feel wrong to most people anymore. When I hear some one say, "Of course he is lying, all politicians lie," I hang may head... while not to long ago I objected to such declarations.

Yesterday I got a call. An old friend who is a paraplegic of twenty years and who lives alone was freaking out. She was in an accident at work in October, injuring her neck and one arm, rendering her a virtual quadriplegic. Yesterday her care givers had been notified they would no longer be paid to provide services until some required processes had been completed. This created a life threatening situation so I agreed to see what I could do to help. Its not my area and I had to take some time out of my normal responsibilities to explore the problem.

I made calls to attorneys, to the insurance company, to the contracted service provider, and to workers comp. The buck was passed around and around with no one giving me a straight answer about what it would take to get a service provider to this woman's residence. So I started a conference call to explore the possibilities and all I got was bureaucratic thumb twiddling. Finally, I simply stated that I would hold each of them personally liable for what happens to this woman between now and the time her services were restored. They (not so miraculously) came up with an instant solution, and a service provider was dispatched within ten minutes.

I've felt the same way for some time about our political system, we are in crisis and the bureaucrats are twiddling as our situation is worsening.
