"But these people cannot afford to pay the western drug companies. If a drug company in one of these nations clones the drugs in question and sell it cheap to their public, they have not caused any revenue shortfall to the original drug producers and they have saved many lives. The question then becomes should they be allowed to do so and save lives, or should we let people die in agony by suing such drug makers?"

So would you argue that the people on unemployment and food stamps in the US should be allowed to import those drugs since they can't afford US prices? Or should the US be allowed to import those drugs because we can't afford to buy them for the poor without printing more money and making our currency even more worthless?

Then by extension, should unprofitable companies be allowed to import knock-off Cisco routers from China using parts that don't pay Rambus for patents on their memory designs, etc? I mean everyone should have a cell phone to make emergency 911 calls... and everyone needs a cheap PC to keep up with the rich kids in the US schools so let the poor and middle class import fakes that don't pay patent royalties and use copied MSFT software....

Where have I heard this before .... "to each according to his needs" .... that doesn't work.
