Sam,

I would put the accent on different words, but then I'm probably more optimistic. ;-)

Not everything we heard was bullish during our travels. One of our goals during the AEA Conference was to assess the status of DUV lithography. Although DUV stepper shipments appear to be growing nicely, many device manufacturers have expressed that this transition is much more difficult than originally anticipated. One analyst told us DUV steppers purchased by one semiconductor company were "printing nice circles." Ultimately, these problems will be resolved, but for now, we would caution investors about the near-term prospects.

The actual words used by Carl in the quoted text indicate that DUV has been growing "nicely", whatever that is. I must be a quant or something. Whereas, of all the companies included in "nicely", only one unnamed company is rumoured to be experiencing problems. Frankly, I'm surprised. Until DUV is in production, I would have expected all of them to be experiencing problems. After all, they haven't made this R&D investment solely to improve the welfare of the Stepper companies.

The problems will be identified and resolved. Then the pilot lines will become the production lines and the money will flow to the Capital Equipment companies.

The question remains, "When" not "If". IMHO.

Ian

Sam,

If you can go back about three or four articles on Carl Johson at the same Internet location, then he had in October a long analysis of the DUV technology and who it impacts.... Long on KLIC, SEMX, and SMTL.

BTW KLIC will be doing a presentation before Prudential Securities today....

Sincerely,

Doug F.
