"We don't need as many people as we have" if they don't produce more than they consume.

The arithmetic of production vs consumption is only a piece of it. With enough people, everyone won't have a patch of ground to stand on to produce or consume. While being useful is useful for building self-esteem, etc, it doesn't to me seem necessary or desirable to have everyone be economically productive, which is really code for finding a way to earn more money than you spend, predatory or not.

I think the more robust equation is (Less Production + Less Consumption) * Less People = A Happier Planet

PS In the Holiday spirit, I want to thank this thread for providing many hours of thoughtful and fun reading. I feel very lucky to be able to be a small part of it.

responsibility and seeking always one step higher: if man (as in Mankind not as the male being) would not have bills to pay, he'd be like the lion.

Eat, drink, sleep, reproduce and repeat.

We have to keep moving because we have two features:
We want to have always to be better than we actually are and we have what is called responsibility.

That forces as to work, think, modify the environment, shape the Earth as we seen fit.

We cannot stop.

Fabulous post..one of the best of the year...thanks!

"The world would be an even better place if we could eliminate predation, force predators to produce rather than consume. Human beings are malleable, predators can learn to create, or at least put their abilities in support of creation, of wealth, of well-being. We can all do more".

Hello cb elaine, 7:10am hong kong time, 6:10am local time.

All is peaceful in red-shirt revolutionary Thailand. The Thais, like your compatriots, have also forgotten how to change the state of is and have accepted just is.

The greatest exploitation is that of fiat inflation of the global reserve currency, a ponzi theft of what you think you have left over after taxploitation.

To think you can fight via vote and win shall prove wrong, as more become less and need to support a system that is finely tuned to take from you until you become them.

Had you taken the green pill, years ago, and astutely engaged with shiny gold, that which is true and is true weapon of choice against fiat inflation, instead of mutual funds and billing address, you would be about 4x better off now than you are. The math is easy n true.

Over the next few days I shall take a macro reading and dispense value-laden observations.

you can thank me 10 years hence.

Cheers, tj

"Human beings are deeply flawed. We are all, all of us, deeply flawed." But wait we can rise above this, because we are not deeply flawed after all.

Speak for yourself CB. < We are all, all of us, deeply flawed > I'm not deeply flawed. It just my modesty and humility that need a slight tweak to attain perfection.

Humbly, but perfectly,
Mqurice

Hi CB ..

1) re: we have too many people.. that is really out of context.. you need to address also lots of cultural adjustments will be required.

2) look back at my posts over the years.. pro public ED, public health care (NO ONE NEEDS BE LEFT BEHIND is actually one of my statements on that).. so I am not Malthus..

3) Now look at agriculture.. once heavily labour intensive.. look at general manufacturing like cars and the degree of automation and subsequent job reduction... (HK New Years just now) .. look at newer industries like chips.. automation and productivity make Malthus assumptions look like he was a piker in terms of his productivity thinking..

4) unlike Malthus I do not think we need poor folks as a cheap hungry labour supply.. nor do I I believe we cannot feed everyone.. nor do I think we need war/famine to cull the herd.. Capitalism does though.. and heaven forbid the Limbaugh types get the upper hand .. then you will see old fashioned Malthusian principles in your backyard... for now you have lefty waste.. I dunno ? which is better/worse.. same issue up here but less severe.. your government pension benefits BTW actually look better than us commies have up here ... whodathunkit :O)

5) look at the growing gap between rich and poor in the US and other western democracies... a trend that is in reverse in China/India/Brazil...

6) re China/India.. they will have the same problem.. in a shorter time frame.. but for now they have a huge advantage of folks for whom the middle class line is BELOW the western poverty line...

7) New jobs from green initiatives in the US.. China is already outpacing you guys..

8) for a century man has been addressing the too many people issue.. Communism in Russia and the European east.. failed.. Communism in China.. failed.. Cuba... failed... Capitalism in the West... failing... (China sees that also... and so are winging it..) Russia ? a mafia state...

9) Do you know, there are people who spend their entire lives victimizing others, simply because they can? They target sectors of the population with a high percentage of people who can be taken advantage of, the weak -- people with diminished capacity, the young and foolish, the gullible? They deliberately target poor people, who cannot read and have few friends I agree with your sentiment.. as I said in #4... I am not the type to worry about... hand ups are just fine with me.. Message 27036948

10) the current setup is not designed for the number of folks we have..... A better mousetrap is required.. We are still looking... thankfully..

CB... have a great New Year.. and thank you for attacking the idea.. and not me..

classy as usual..

The Cute and Cuddly one..
K
