Once the political persuasion of the assassin is known, expect the denials of any fault by the fomenters of hate. I would hope that this senseless act would help bring some sanity back to the political discussion in this country, but I have my doubts that this will happen. There seems to be too much money to be made for this to stop without some type of legislation that would prevent people from outright lying over the airwaves.

I posted this a few days on what happened in Pakistan:
Message 27066835

"Extremism in the defense of liberty... " etc. Although the Pakistan shooting had nothing to do with the defense of liberty, in fact it was the opposite.

But these things always begin with ideas and words.

This woman is a former Republican:

Giffords herself has drawn the ire of the right, especially for her support of the health care bill from politicians like Sarah Palin.

Her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote to approve the health care law in March, with someone either kicking or shooting out a glass door and window.

Despite the animosity she has generated from the right, Giffords describes herself as a former Republican and current Blue Dog Democrat.

"You know, actually as a former Republican, you know, I consider myself someone who is pretty in the middle, I'm a blue dog Democrat, and one that is interested in making sure that our country maintains our prosperity and frankly, our superiority over other countries and that's where we look at these threat, obviously our defense budget, our level of education," she said in an interview with Fox this week

Apparently, she is still in surgery. At least one aide died.

Giffords had been named as a political campaign target for conservatives in November's elections by former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin for her strong support of Obama's reforms. Palin had published a "target map" on her website using images of gun sights to identify 20 House Democrats, including Giffords, for backing the new health care law.

This is pretty sick..

The shooter was apparently a 22 year old white male and veteran of Afghanistan.

A Bush appointed Federal judge was also shot....assume he was a Rep?

A child was shot and killed.

Maybe this wasn't a clear cut case of anti-Dem politically based assualt. Maybe it was a whacked out, PTSD guy who couldn't find a decent job.
