All I can say is those who pinned him down showed way more restraint than I would have. You should see what happens when someone yells "Thief" in even "moderate" places in Africa like Kenya. Its not pretty. Nutcase got lucky I guess.

Sounds like the police had some dealings with him before. How did he get a gun? I think someones going to look bad over this.

Once back in the late '80s I had just flown into Boston, and was a little north of the city when a report came on the radio about a shooting at a mall nearby. IIRC, a young woman killed in the parking lot, by her ex who walked up and shot her point blank. A guy witnessed it, followed the suspect a little ways in his car, and shot him dead. Turns out he himself had only recently bought a gun after a friend or family member had been murdered some little time before.

They didn't prosecute him, even though he was not himself in danger, and the suspect was fleeing. I thought that was a good call on the part of the legal system. They could have hung some flavor of manslaughter on him. Not sure what. I've likely forgotten many of the details.
