The USMC has always been part of the Navy and likely will remain the same. The absence of Amphibious landings hasn't diminished their role to date. Vertical Envelopment has been their mantra for many years. They will remain on Naval ships as a fast deployment force for years to come...supposing this country can afford any Armed Forces with their disgusting spending habits.

They are now an armed service desperately searching everywhere for a mission.

That's why they are so big on "Vertical Envelopment." And why they wanted the Osprey so bad. They have already turned their original job of Shipboard Policeman back to the Navy.

I think this joint Marine/Navy engagement force [MEW] they are doing with Amphibious Assault ships seems like an excuse to take a Battalion of Marines around the world so that they can get drunk in every port. :>)

They aren't going to go away. But as an old SF guy, you can sit back and enjoy the denouement. :>)
