I already said I don't think the level of vitriol means diddly squat when it comes to real life decisions by sober and sane people.

It was a bigger problem in the past, is my guess. Easier to inflame the public because the fact checking mechanisms we have today were absent back then and countervailing opinions were not as readily at hand. Blatant lies could be spread and then stick, to take on a life of their own.

The internet today is indeed a verbal slugfest, but anyone can quickly surf around to read up on the other side of an issue. The net benefit of this is lost on those who decry the rhetoric on the internet.
