by your insistence that Palin was in any way to blame for the tragedy.

Palin wants to be a leader - a leader leads by example. To lead in a positive way she had a decision, to try to inflame emotions or to dial down the rhetoric and rancorous hate speech. She clearly has inflamed emotions. That might be the leader you want, but increasingly it looks as if you are in a shrinking minority. Was she to blame? No one knows that, not you and not me. That's not what I'm arguing, I'm saying her actions can lead to wackos acting on their stupid ideas.

I have a second issue here. I firmly believe in the second amendment and when we get the results we did in Arizona - it makes us gun nuts look bad. Palins action and political posturing has done a lot of harm to those who believe in responsible gun ownership.

You're saying a lot for offering me the last word.

I don't think anyone is claiming that its all Palin's fault. But it is quite clear that Palin (along with the likes of Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh et al) have made very significant contributions to the tone of intolerance, incivilty, and confrontation that permeates our political scene today. I'm sure that anyone who cares to can list left leaning voices who have also made inappropriate and incivil statements. This over the edge incivility in turn provides encouragement to the crazies who perpetrate events such as the Arizona shooting. Direct cause and effect? Of course not. Contributory negligence? Of course!

IMO, politicians and commentators of all stripes should view this as an opportunity to step back from the brink and acknowledge that despite real political differences that exist, we all are striving towards the same objective - a free and open society with sufficient economic opportunities so that our children and grandchildren can live happy, healthy and prosperous lives in a land of peace and plenty. Acknowledging political differences ought not lead to the demonization of ones political opponents as has been happening much too often in contemporary US society.
