Imperial overstretch as per Paul Kennedy. "Imperial overstretch, also known as Imperial overreach, is a hypothesis which suggests that an empire can extend itself beyond its ability to maintain or expand its military and economic commitments. The idea was popularised by Yale historian Paul Kennedy in his 1987 book The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers."

US military is a Monkey Trap. To catch a Monkey you need a weaved basket device with a small hole enough for the monkey to insert his hand. Inside the basked you put a banana.

The monkey comes see the banana and carefully insert his hand.
He grabs the banana, but his fist cannot come out through the small hole.

He holds that banana and until caught by the hunter. He get caught but not loose the banana, takes his hand oiut and flee.

The defense budget needs very serious paring. There is absolutely no doubt about that.

We can defend our national interests at half the cost.

Nation building in Afghanistan is a joke. But it is the conflict Obama supported during his campaign. It is a cheap war for the Taliban's Saudi paymasters, but an incredibly expensive and fruitless one for us.

I was always concerned that toppling Saddam would remove one of Iran's implacable enemies from the scene. This concern is now real. When we leave, the Shiites are sure to take over. Their connection to Iran will be the sole legacy of the Iraqi war.

I was in favor of Iraq but in retrospect I was wrong, though I did have the concern set forth above.
