It does seem strange to have extended Iran's power nearer to Israel by giving them control of Iraq. But perhaps the Iraqis of the same religious affiliation will find that oily profits are more important than purported religious agreement and won't act at Iran's behest.

Iraq is considerably closer to Israel, and Israel probably prefers to have the current situation than that of Saddam paying suicide bomber families and otherwise arranging attacks on Israel.

Whatever the background, it is what it now is and Saudi Arabia is no doubt supporting the Sunnis of Iraq.

The region has a LOT of spare young males, so continuous war seems likely as the struggle for supremacy continues and Malthusian forces work their relentless and merciless way. Perhaps oil will buy the peace for another decade or three to Peak People in 2037.

C2, think of them as individuals with Islamic Jihad ideology. They don't need a base. Once they have belief, the tools at hand are simple to apply. On 911, the 19 needed box cutters, a bit of simulator time and some airliner tickets. It doesn't take much genius to pour cyanide into a water reservoir, spray disease or poison over buffet food, buy sealed food at a supermarket, take it home, inject it with poison, then put it back on the shelf next week. They don't search bags on the way INTO a supermarket. Doing the poisoning at the supermarket could draw attention, but reading a label then putting the container back on the shelf would not.

There is any number of ways of being disruptive though they are vicious thugs so actual mutilating murder is their ideal.

One good thing about the Afghanistan war is that it's good live fire training. It acts as a good warning to others who might get too aggressive like North Korea. Training is all very well, but actually doing it is the best training. Being bankrupt isn't conducive to such efforts though.

I don't think many foresaw the extent of our involvement in Afghanistan. and yet Russia provided a clear map of the folly...
