McCain was not very compelling in any way. He was incredibly weak. After 8 years of Bush, anyone could have won as the anti-Bush. Obama also had the benefit of being turned into a demigod by the press.

As we saw by the landslide in November, you can win by being anti-Obama. I don't see things improving that much by November 2012. Running against Obama, big government and the bankruptcy of the country, should be easy for a competent Conservative. Anybody too weak and cowardly to lay the blame on Obama(like a McCain) will lose...
