We've had this discussion before. There is iOS platform that consists of phones and tablets just as there is Android platform that consists of phones and very soon lots of tablets. Lets not keep repeating ourselves.

A 15% smartphone unit share would put Apple near the top against all of smartphone models.

True, that addresses the benefits of "scale" as it relates to the smartphone competition, but platform share is still relevant in terms of developer reach. We'll see if Apple decides to fight for platform share or not. Certainly, they see it as an important talking point (see their recent practice of lumping all iOS devices together), but they aren't really doing anything about it. The market for $600 cell phones is already dominated by the iPhone and I imagine the growth there is pretty limited going forward. Obviously, they need to go downmarket eventually if they choose to fight for share. When will they introduce an iPhone nano?
