The Canadian coal industry will add more than 20 million metric tons of capacity at its major ports over the next 3-4 years, Westshore Terminals Vice President and General Manager Denis Horgan told the Canadian Conference on Coal this week in Vancouver.

The myriad of expansion work is largely in response to increasing demand for space as potential terminals in Washington state - Cherry Point and Longview - contend with opposition from environmentalists. Horgan said Cherry Point is the last available deepwater space in the Pacific Northwest.
