Lets hope it works out. Having our cities in a tailspin is obviously not a good thing. From what I am reading, there are a lot of small things happening.......small shops, a light rail line, an incubator for businesses, a riverfront walk that is becoming increasingly popular, the restoration of an old hotel, companies moving their operations from the suburbs into the city etc. There is this one guy who lives in Grosse Pointe, an affluent suburb just north of Detroit. When he drove into work on Jefferson Blvd, it was beautifully tree lined in GP. But as soon as he crossed the border into Detroit the trees would disappear and the buildings would look shabby. It turns out that back in the 1970s, some disease attacked the Elm and Ash trees of the region. GP could afford to medically treat their trees and replace those that died. Detroit could not. Hence, the disparity. So the guy found out how much it would cost to buy enough starter trees to plant along Jefferson Blvd........the number was $300K. He raised the money and a year ago, they planted the trees. Small thing.......hardly earth shattering but encouraging nonetheless. Bottomline: This country can not be losing so many cities wholesale like that. It suggests an underlying disease that is sapping the strength of the country.
