We're talking about the US dollar, not currency for the rest of the world. And even the poorest of US residents live way better than average citizens did in 1900.

I have been pondering this discussion since it started. I have concluded that one way to look at the value of the dollar is in what starting salaries for a specific job were say 40 years ago and today. A Chem E starting in 1970 could get approximately $12k. I think today it is circa $55 - 60k. That would imply a clear depreciation of the $ by approximately 80% in 40 years.

I do not know what the starting salary trends over the last five years or so would be.

"And of course the privileged few are screaming to end such entitlements."

Margaret Thatcher is claimed to have said: "The problem with socialism is that ,eventually, you run out of other people's money.

potato: "The standard of living has increased for some. Exponentially only for the rich. What about the other 5 billion or so humans living on earth."

==========================

What, they are driving two cars simultaneously now?
They are eating 2, 3 or 5 times as much each meal?
[you are the one who said "exponentially"]

GEEZ......please get serious.

=========Now++++++++++++++++

for the other 5 Billion folks who are still eating earthworms....They are preparing to march in the next protest to keep WalMart out of town. They know what's good for them. Better to buy dirty water from a local merchant in town than to be allowed to buy 'pure' water at WalMart. They know "exploitation" when they see it. WalMart in their town? Never.

OOPs...sorry...forgot. They are now preparing to riot and steal from the local stores. Free Food...Free STUFF. for a week

And then? Oh......yeah, I can hear the shop keepers now: "Yo, send me 30 more cases of sirloin. It has been a hot seller. I can't keep them in stock"

PS food stamps? Just print them.....and the food will appear;
Better Yet...challenge Oprah and Jaylo and Brad Pitt to donate 50% of their annual earnings to Zimbabwe or Mugabe----or even 30% to Detroit. Dattle be da dey.
