We're talking about the US dollar, not currency for the rest of the world. And even the poorest of US residents live way better than average citizens did in 1900.

I have been pondering this discussion since it started. I have concluded that one way to look at the value of the dollar is in what starting salaries for a specific job were say 40 years ago and today. A Chem E starting in 1970 could get approximately $12k. I think today it is circa $55 - 60k. That would imply a clear depreciation of the $ by approximately 80% in 40 years. I do not know what the starting salary trends over the last five years or so would be. Bob
