I think most people would pay less (depending on rate) under a consumption tax - but the problem is government would be pitted against you head on. For government to grow taxes they must encourage consumption, while under a flat tax, to increase their revenue, they need to promote jobs.

I do not trust the beast called government to look out for anyone except their own interests and would prefer they encourage business growth and job creation - not consumption for their own growth.

A flat tax is also a small step and they can easily calculate the expected revenues now by simply looking at the adjusted gross income of all taxpayers. A consumption tax would be hard to estimate a rate and be subject to spending habits in good and bad times. Again I would prefer a government be vested in jobs as the basis of their revenue along with the rest of us worker bees.
