Bill, There is a whole other world of tax shelters that open up to people with the money to hire an accountant. Look - the game has given me a low effective tax rate - and I assure you my wife and I are not impoverished seniors. And yes - I started taking our SS at 62 before it is taken away. I do assure you my wife recycles it very effectively back into the economy.

Yes, you've explained the math quite well. What you describe is also quite legal. When you layer on some less than legal maneuvers, such as offshore accounts, that effective tax rate comes down even more.

To me, the real tell is simply that you don't hear the uber rich calling for flat tax schemes.
