What frosts me is that my wife and I both got settlement checks of about $12 as a result of some class action lawsuit over a mutual fund that we no longer even have.

I got an email about 6 months ago from a guy (who I didn't even know) who works in my old company in the United Arab Emirates. He's been told by the mail room workers that there was unclaimed mail for me, and wanted to know what to do with it. I told him I don't expect anything, and to open it to see if there was anything important. Well, surprise surprise, there was an expired check for $750 for ..... an Enron settlement! I don't think I ever joined any class action suit thing, but that was a pleasant unexpected surprise. I contacted the suit administrator and voila, free money. :-)
