Ok, I have the subsidy on grains figured out. There is not a subsidy for growing grain. It's for not growing grain called the conservation reserve. In the pothole region where many of our ducks and other birds are hatched farmers get paid to plant natural prairie grasses around the potholes making for large nesting areas. It's not to just save several kinds of birds but also to keep native grasses intact. They also serve as catch basins for water.

It also applies to erodible ground along water sheds. Keeps the water cleaner and slows silting in the rivers.

Now this is a rental plan where the farmer is leasing the ground to the USDA. This rental has now been labeled as a subsidy to farmers. Kind of like you pay a subsidy to your landlord.
