Joe, sorry I'm not Mike, may I still try to answer your question?

Thank you.

FYI : "The clik! drives, which can also be linked to desktop computers, have a suggested retail price under $200 "

That's gotta be higher than $150. Which means the price difference between flash and n.hand is close to nil.

As regards the reduction of price of SanDisk's CF cards I can tell you that according to 10Q : they have ongoing programs to reduce costs at the current level (32bit technology) as well as at the next level 64bit technology.

As I stated in message 1545 : flash memory prices are going down dramatically and should decrease more then ever with 2bit per cell technology and added fab capacity with larger wafers,...

Prices for 10MB could decrease up to 50% next year. Early 99 prices per MB would even be lower than click disks, i.e. for a 40MB flash card.

IOM can not achieve such price drops unless they discover new technology.

Sorry few proven facts. But I don't have all necessary infos at hand.

I'd like to correct message 1545 : IOM is willing to make its Click an open technology by allowing Matsushita and others to manufacture the product and sell it under their own brand name.

Joe, I believe in a year or two, flash price will drop to about $1.00/MB. That means a 60MBytes CF that can store 300 high resolution pictures will cost only $60 bucks, quite affordable. The key word here is affordability. The consumers are not always looking for the best price but low quality products. Look at how many 4X4 SUVs are sold in this country who are only driven on paved freeways. At today price, a 6MB CF will cost about $24, quite affordable compared to films. A 6MB CF can store 120 low resolution pictures, or 30 high resolution pictures. With high resolution pictures, that's about the capacity of a roll of film but flash is reusable. So I go out and take about 30 pictures and go home and unload onto my hard drive. Pretty soon, I go out and buy another 6MB CF for spare, and then I keep buying more CF for spare. You know how it goes with electronics toys. First a camcorder, then a camcorder bag, then lenses, then lighting equip., then editing equipment, and it goes on.

To make it short, a beginner digital cam kit is only the cost of the camera (less than $300), plus a $24 6MB CompactFlash, quite affordable.

My 1 1/2 cents.
