The age of the Burgess Shale can be determined by methods that are independent of the fossils. The prime technique there is radioisotopic, relating to uranium/lead ratios in mineral grains. The technique is established enough that the error bars are about one per cent of the age.
I looked online for an isotopic age for the shale but could not find. I did find reason to post a correction. Current age estimate is 505 Ma, not 530 as I'd posted. The age I'd memorized long ago is obsolete...

Uniformitarianism ... got me there. I do subscribe to it, unless/until a serious challenge to it emerges from the study of this planet or others. I am not aware of one, and uniformitarianism has a lot to recommend it.
