news.com Like we have discussed on this thread, toward the end of this article, it said that IOM will make some accessory to allow CompactFlash to download pictures onto a Clik! floppy. Nowhere did the article say that Clik! is supposed to be incorporated into the digital camera. Clik! is meant to be an add on accessory to the digital camera. The cost of Clik! was mentioned as close to $200. If we add the battery pack and the CF to Clik! interface, we will probably talk about $250. Clik! may affect sales of CF slightly as people may not need to buy spare CFs. Personally, I will buy a 60MB CF that allows me to store 300 high resolution pictures. Current cost of 60MB CF is about $240 and a year from now, it may cost less than $100. So Clik! is not a flash killer. It's rather a complementary product to flash. I think in the next 2 years, the digital camera will start hitting critical mass. People will start to buy a digital cam and get rid of the old film camera; people will also buy their first CF to go along with the camera. It's only after everyone has owned a digital camera that we may have to worry about the growth of this company.news.com The above article is about a year old. A year ago, IOM tried to pre-announce Clik! with the hope that it will be accepted by the camera makers. Obviously, the effort had failed and the cam makers went with flash. The article also said that Clik! will be shipped in the second quarter of this year but now it won't be shipped til 2nd quarter next year, a year late. Sandisk probably won the battle because it had laid out a better plan to the cam makers. For instance, the cam makers may get inside knowledge about planned future capacity of flash and drastic price cut.news.com This article talked about the needs for real time photography that can only be achieved with digital camera. Digital pictures can now be transmitted instantaneously as e-mail. Happy reading.
