I was talking to the hotel manager where we had stayed the year before, in NC, and sort of learning the hotel lingo where by they can cancel the room if you don't show up, I suggested that "lets say, I was driving and all of a sudden got stuck in ... I don't know, Pittsburgh".

He then replied "Wait a minute. The tone of your voice saying Pittsburgh implies it is not a good place - and I am from Pittsburgh."

We had a good laugh over that ... and good to hear your niece has done well for herself.

As far as RAID software -
a) The MOBOs I own have had RAID in the BIOS;
b) The Vantec (the link I gave you) has no software per se.

Yes you can get software based raid, but in most cases it is hardware based raid - you cannot see or do anything other than "adding/rebuilding/removing" drives. The O/S doesn't see anything - as well it shouldn't.

Now then the software you are talking about could be the RAID management software (adding/rebuilding/removing). You are implying an error on your machine - in that case going into the software it makes no mention of bad sectors? No sound, nothing?

How do you know that the machine has a bad spot and trying to get around that? What is indicating that to you?

In a perfect scenario - your machine or "raid management software if you go in" or "during boot up" should say something to indicate there is a problem. ie When you boot and it shows the raid - does it indicate a "Broken array" or "Array needs to be rebuild" or "Problem with drive X" ???
