All nations go through phases of development.

Yes.. the US conquered the various Indian tribes of North America, many of whom were constantly at war with each other as well. That was the era of "Manifest Destiny" and the majority of nations of the world grew their empires during the same period.

But the US stopped acquiring territory when the League of Nations came into being. And thereafter our policy was one of decolonization. The Phillipines wanted independence and they received it. Independence is available for every other US territory (Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa.. etc) if they so choose it.

THEY have the right to stay, or leave, their affiliation with the US and few Americans would fight their attempt to leave.

Apparently the Tibetans don't have the right to end their affiliation with China.

Of course, many Americans have forgotten these ideals [because most, including myself, never really understood them]

And that sums up the difference between you and the majority of Americans. Your rights can be arbitrarily granted and taken from you, depending upon who's in charge..

Americans, under the constitution, hold the ultimate power in determining what their individual rights will be.

You have little, to no, power over your government. The American people, when they choose to exercise it, have ultimate power over their government.
