Apple manufactures and sells smartphones. It competes in this with other companies that manufacture and sell smartphones.

Apple is not only profitable, it is raking in the overwhelming majority of the profits that are made in the smart phone market.

Some of those manufacturers sell phones with the free Android operating system. Some also pay licensing fees to use other operating systems. Add up all of the profits from all of non-Apple manufacturers and it does not equal the profit that Apple is making from smartphones. They are a commodity. The iPhone is not. The iPhone ASP has, in fact, increased over the past few quarters.

Those are the most important facts.
