The math still doesn't work out. Even if you covered all the roofs in the SW with PV cells, it would only be able to support like one tenth of the population down there switching to electric vehicles.

Major breakthroughs in PV efficiency can increase that fraction to one-fourth, but you'll still need oil to power the vast majority of cars, even in the sunny SW.

This is why I keep stressing the supplemental characteristic of solar (and wind) energy. Moving one quarter of the population to electric vehicles will make a huge dent in demand for oil. And since oil demand is traditionally inelastic, that's going to make an even bigger dent in the price.

But trying to imagine a future without oil is like trying to imagine a future with warp drive.
