Consequences of Republican Budget Cuts

Both Democrats and Republicans must agree on a budget in the coming days to keep the government running—and President Obama is committed to finding common ground. However, the current Republican proposal would cost nearly a million Americans their jobs and slash everything from public education to environmental protection to national security. It would undercut government's ability to function, and the President has been clear that he simply cannot endorse a plan that would derail America's recovery.

>> unless there is a need to defend oneself and/or a vital national interest, and when there are not, that there be a great humanitarian issue at hand, where the response is commensurate with the nature of the disaster and where the benefit of victims is clear...

All criteria which were met in Iraq.

Oh, yes, THAT sticky provision. One full of moral obstacles and dilemmas. What happens if there exists a vital national interest yet the rest of the world doesn't happen to agree with us? We give up the right to protect ourselves?

What if millions of Jews are being slaughtered and Europe thinks they can do business with the killer, and chooses not to back the action of the U.S. (i.e., the "shoe on the other foot" scenario)?

More complicated cases are everywhere. Take North Korea -- a more brutalized people probably does not exist -- yet, ask any one of them and they will tell you just how "grateful" they are for "dear leader" for allowing them to work in his salt mines. A result of brainwashing in its most extreme form. Like the Iraqis, these people would choose freedom if only they knew what it was to be free; but they can never rise up against tyranny. Too bad for them, or what?

2057: Adam, in New York, writes: "The Libyan building by the UN in New York, which had continued to fly Gaddafi's Green flag throughout this uprising, has now replaced it with the rebel tri-colour flag. I can see it from my window."
