T.G.W.: Sam is a well informed HDD investor. He has a valid point. Philip may be a little too optimistic. I have a lot of WDC shares. I am on the same boat. But, we need to stop insane pricing of HDD (that only benefits box makers) in order for the stock to adavnce to the previous level.
We need some miracle now and good execution from management. I can count on the latter.
John

TGW,
I don't think you understood what I was saying. I was just responding to Phillip, who said that "ruthless" price cuts and layoffs by WDC are around the corner. I was only saying that, if this is true, then DD investors are toast, at least for awhile. Since I am a DD investor, I do not want that to happen.

I have no information about either "ruthless" price cuts other than those which Fujitsu have initiated, according to CH in the recent CC, or WDC layoffs. Nor have I ever pretended to have such information. Personally, I fervently hope that Philip is wrong, and believe that Chuck Haggerty is smart enough to not do such a thing unless he believed that he could nip an incipient serious problem in the bud, and judged that the short term pain would be worth the long term gain (that is, that he judged he could either get rid of a competitor who would indulge in such behavior, or discourage other companies from doing it).

Hope that clarifies my position.

Sam

TGW and All: What is your take on Maxtor? They seem to be aggressively pushing their 5.1 ($280), 7.0 ($350), 8.4 ($400), Ultra IDE drives. (The prices are from Best Buy and CompUSA, this past week.) What is Maxtor's reputation on reliability? TIA
