There are investment stocks and there are trading stocks. When I started exploring retirement finances I sat with the Fidelity advisor and looked at my portfolio which included Exxon shares that had been in the family for 3 generations. We talked about how successful the family DRIP investments into XOM had been. The man said to me he was from Detroit before coming to Cleveland and had had the same discussion with people - but people who had Ford and GM as their core holdings.

It was a lesson in diversification I have never forgotten. I am glad grandpa picked XOM and not Ford or GM.

Frankly, I believe XOM is about the best managed enterprise on the planet.
