Y2K DISLOSURE BILL INTRODUCED

Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) has introduced s. 1518, the Year 2000 Computer Remediation and Shareholder (CRASH) Protection Act of 1997. The bill would require publicly traded corporations to make specific disclosures in their initial public offerings statements and quarterly reports regarding the ability of their systems to operate after January 1, 2000. The bill seeks to protect the interests of consumers and investors, forcing public companies to disclose specific information about their Y2K readiness as well as their ability to manage associated business risks.

If the bill passes in its current form, federal regulations would require disclosure on Y2K program progress, remediation costs, estimated litigation costs, insurance coverage and contingency plans.
