No matter what standards emerge the modems' flash memory will be upgradable via software (over the Internet). If you bought a X56 "capable" modem last fall you could upgrade in the Spring to run at 56K this way.

I upgraded a USR modem to USR's x2, completely through DSP software. I begin to feel there may never be an ITU standard for 56k. This technology will be dead when cable modem or ADSL modem becomse cheap enough sometime next year. Unfortunately, we may see a pissing contest all over again between Rockwell and USR.
