Brumar, > OTOH I do suspect there are circumstances of his birth he doesn't want known.

To be frank, I don't want them known either. I don't think it's any of our business, and this is just devolving into tabloid fodder.

Let's just focus on whether Obama is doing his job well, not the circumstances of his birth and childhood.

I have no doubt he was born in HA. His mother and grandparents lived there. His purported father was an exchange student there. His birth was announced in a local paper.

I believe this, too. HOWEVER, there is a plausible alternative scenario, in which he was born in Kenya and eight days later it was decided that it would be the newborn's benefit to be an American citizen, and they decided to run the ads and in some way arrange for a birth certificate to be placed on file. Not beyond the realm of possibility.

The point is that without an executed birth certificate (other than a certificate of live birth) you cannot know the details. We don't know which hospital he was purportedly born in; we don't know which physician signed the original birth certificate, and we don't know any of the details.

Here is a cut/paste of the relevant statute:

“[§338-17.8] Certificates for children born out of State.
(a) Upon application of an adult or the legal parents of a minor child, the director of health shall issue a birth certificate for such adult or minor, provided that proof has been submitted to the director of health that the legal parents of such individual while living without the Territory or State of Hawaii had declared the Territory or State of Hawaii as their legal residence for at least one year immediately preceding the birth or adoption of such child.

(b) Proof of legal residency shall be submitted to the director of health in any manner that the director shall deem appropriate. The director of health may also adopt any rules pursuant to chapter 91 that he or she may deem necessary or proper to prevent fraudulent applications for birth certificates and to require any further information or proof of events necessary for completion of a birth certificate.

As one can see, there is no requirement for issuance of a birth certificate that the child be born in Hawaii; only that the parents claim that THEY were legal residents.

Now, I'm not saying I believe there is a problem here. But it is a pretty big deal if a president fails to meet the constitutional requirements. It is a reasonable thing to demand that the man produce the evidence. Ten's opinion, notwithstanding.
