Free markets created the success that got Detroit established in the first place. Unions and governments caused much of its ongoing problems later on.

If you believe that nonsense, then I have a few bridges to sell you.

Detroit has tried to offer the special breaks you argue are necessary, it hasn't helped them much. What they need is lower taxes, fewer and more rational regulations more efficiently and quickly applied, better schools, and better policing (the last two are not "smaller government" like the first two, but they are examples of how Detroit's government has failed.

Detroit failed for two reasons: it became a one industry town, depending on an industry whose corporate mgmt FAILED to change with the times and it suffered the consequences of white flight that swept this nation for several decades.
