Michael, I agree that once I have confidence in the fundamentals, I can average down without much fear. That was the case with Qntm, and I was rewarded.

However, sometimes the fundamentals aren't what they appear, or they can be undergoing some kind of change. Sometimes it turns out the management has been giving private audiences to analysts, who then send out notes to 1000s of big clients. Meanwhile, the individual investor is still unaware, and next thing you know there are earnings downgrades coming across the wires. Right now I'm caught with a losing position in 3Com Corp. Since 3Com CEO gave a private audience to analysts, which resulted in earnings downgrades of about 5%, the individual investor is left in the dark as to what is really happening in re the fundamentals, since the stock has fallen much more than 5%. So in the case of 3Com it's not real clear what the best course is.
