Paul and thread,

More litigations: INTC vs. SSTI

Intel sues Silicon Storage in patent dispute

WILMINGTON, Del., Nov 14 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. INTC.O, the world's largest computer chip maker, filed a lawsuit against Silicon Storage Technology Inc. SSTI.O on Friday, alleging that Silicon's Flash EEPROM memory chips infringe four of its patents.

Flash EEPROM -- or electrically erasable and programmable read-only memory -- are specialized computer chips used primarily in consumer electronics to store data even after the device is turned off.

In papers filed in the U.S. District Court in Delaware, Intel said Silicon "developed their Flash EEPROM business at an extraordinary rate with net revenues of more than $13 million" in U.S. sales last year.

Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., seeks a court order against further alleged infringement and unspecified damages tripled for alleged willfull infringement. Silicon, of Sunnyvale, California, makes flash memory components for the computer, communications and consumer markets.

A spokeswoman said the company was unable to comment until it had seen the lawsuit.

In September, Silicon was cleared in federal court of allegations that it infringed a computer chip patent held by Atmel Corp ATML.O.

Paul E., do you know when Intel will start making PII desktop on the .25 process (or have they started already)? Also, by mid-year 1998, Intel says 50% of units shipped will be PII. What % of these PII units will be on the .25m process, in your estimation? This will be key to Intel's margins going into 1998 imo.

thanks,
joey
