A lot of stuff in your post but two points for now:

1. Agree about the lucky nature of "GG" which happens to be the symbol for Goldcorp, a gold mining outfit whose shares have doubled in price in two years:

finance.yahoo.com

2. I did read Elegant Universe about a decade ago. Understood some of it, was clueless about much more. Have forgotten most of what I did understand so perhaps it is time for a re-read.

My initial thoughts are that you are much too fascinated by technology. The vast majority of human kind does not know what Facebook is and does not care. Most humans spend most of their time scratching around making a living in order to put [increasingly expensive] food on the table. The things that enthrall you are luxuries for most of humanity. Facebook, which I don't use, simply creates an opportunity for mostly senseless chatter. I doubt very seriously that it has increased productivity very much.

Cell phones and computers and the rest of the what Jay calls the whizbanggeewhiz stuff undoubtedly have increased productivity. However, they in no way decrease human consumption of resources. In fact, because they require power, batteries, copper, aluminum, petroleum, etc., they probably have increased our use of resources.

An increasing population that consumes more and increasingly scarcer commodities will create supply bottlenecks and constraints. We are definitely headed in that direction.

Get some farm land and gold, buy XOM [but not slimy BP] and prepare for a new way of life in which 'stuff' matters a lot more than it once did.
