Bill - Re: 'What are the errors that are cropping up to ruin the .35 yield?, is this public knowledge? If they know that they should be able to improve the yield over time."

I don't know what is currently limiting the yields at AMD - although I suspect that customer order rates are not high and they are "hiding" this fact with their yield problems.

AMD announced on September 3 that low yields were impacting manufacturing. Thus, they must have been fully awrae of the problem (assuming there was a problem) in mid-August.

In ealry November - Nov. 6, Jerry dropped the latest bomb and said yields were still down. That makes for at least a three month stretch of (presumed) low yields.

So, that 3 months is alreay a lot of time in the semiconductor business. And this has resulted in lost sales. These cannever be made up.

And, if and when yields improve, the "new" devices will be selling for a lot less than they were selling for last quarter and even this quarter.

Re: " a parametric approach among the variables and procedures getting better. The time length of the feedback loop might be long"

Yes, this "random" approach would work - given near-infinite time.

The correct way is to perform detailed and accurate low yield analysis and pin point the exact cause for specific defects and/or specific low speed operation of the K6's internal circuits.

That is the most efficient and expeditious method of getting out of the problems that seem to plague AMD. And it would appear that their ability to perform these analytical studies is somewhat "below par".
