Re: Toy Story

(OK, here we go, once again.)

The facts about Toy Story were that Sun told Pixar they would loan
them a bunch of Sun servers if and only if all of the *final*
rendering was done on those machines. Pixar realized this was
a good deal and said "OK, we'll take your free machines".. then they
went and bought a bunch of SGI workstations to do all of the
real/interactive/graphics-intensive work on.

So, yes, "The movie 'Toy Story' was *rendered* using Sun servers".
However, Pixar could have also used a room full of cheap PCs to do
the final rendering because the final rendering is all computation
and NO graphics and NO interactivity.

So, the facts are that SGI workstations were BOUGHT by Pixar to
design/animate Toy Story and Sun servers were *donated* to Pixar to
compute the final images you see in the movie.
