dmf, <Does AMD K7 with Slot 1 compatibility have anything to do with this?. I think the confusion lies in the mistaken belief that the K7 will work in Slot1. AMD'v version will be mechanically compatable, but not electrically nor will it follow the same bus protocol. You won't be able to plug a K7 into an Intel motherboard and expect it to work. EP

dmf - Re: "Does AMD K7 with Slot 1 compatibility have anything to do with this?" Only indirectly. First, the K7 doesn't yet exist. AMD is working on this, the K6 3D, the K6+ and a K8. Their "target" for the K7 is to demonstrate the chip next year at Comdex or the Microprocessor Forum - essentially a year from now. Basically, they are stretched toooooooooooo thin. They mustered all their resources to design the K6 and now they are attempting 4 parallel projects? Good luck, folks! Also, AMD will use the MECHANICAL configuration for the Slot 1 - not the electrical - they will use some version of a DEC Alpha electrical interface - completely different from Intel's slot 1. The very idea of using the mechanical configuration reflects Jerry Sanders obsession with being an Intel wannabee. Intel wants the Slot 1 to replaces socket 7 because they alone hold the intellectual property rights (and TRADE SECRETS) for this configuration. That locks out Cyrix, AMD and IDT and all other copy cats. Paul
