Depending on the technical merit of the features, such action may bring careful examination by the justice department. The advantages of the new slot is viewed by some as suspect, their strongest merit being that they can be used to keep competition out (I am unqualified to make that judgement). Ironically, this move by Intel to a proprietary slot is not unlike the moves made by Apple you recently commented on.

Pentium II (PC) oversupply eroding prices.
Interesting comment that it is not AMD but consumer indifference that is the problem. Seems many buyers know that PII isn't much faster then Pentium.
