kunal , <<there is a best time in the market>>

granted there is always a best time for everything however,if
iom is late to the market on this clik i dont believe kodak,
hp,msft, citizen and all of the other companies that atteded
the conferene would have even bothered showing up. there is a need for the clik now and there will be a need for it for a long time to come. i dont believe they would create something w/ a life
expectancy of just a year ither.just as the zip evolved in to the zip plus look also for the clik to evolve likewise.

>Agreed, but only when it actually shows up! :-)

No matter how good something is, there is a best time to
market it. You cannot be arbitrarily late to market
a great product and still expect it to take the world by
storm.<

Kunal, I don't think we have to worry about Iomega being late to market. They started development in mid '96 and have worked with OEMs for almost a year and a half developing a product that meets the needs of varied products.

Iomega has signed up Citizen to help produce the Clik. Citizen is an excellent manufacturer of products like Clik (small watch like mechs). One of the great engineering stories in the last few years was the Kittyhawk drive (1" and 20MB) from HP. It was acclaimed as a great engineering success because it went from initial desing to volume manufacturing in about 6 months. Citizen did the manufacturing for HP.

Problem with Kittyhawk was HP didn't really line up customers for the product and those that they did failed. At the time PDA's such as the original Newton were the target. Kittyhawk flopped.

Iomega has lined up the customers in a variety of product areas for Clik. Iomega has done their desing homework and enlisted the aide of an excellent manufacturing partner in Citizen.

Right product, right design, right manufacturing and it will be right on time.

>>If, as Iomega has promised, the clik shows up before 1998
is over, it is a product to contend with. However given
Iomega's past history with this particular product (and
I understand it is not trivial to start high yield volume
manufacuring in a short span of time) I would be
cautiously optimistic about it, as explained in my earlier
message.<<

Kunal -

I think Iomega's accomplishments with clik! so far are pretty impressive. In just over a year, they have gone from a standing start to a working prototype which has been refined to be smaller, higher capacity and with lower power consumption. In addition, they have lined up support from a large group of industry powerhouses. They have two major manufacturing companies signed on to produce the drives, and at least one major company (Hitachi) already committed to using the drive in cameras and PDA's.

I think it is true that when clik! was first announced, last November, as n.hand, Iomega was unrealistically optimistic in their estimates of when it would ship. I certainly hope they've learned their lesson on that score.

Almost forgot why I was responding to you. I don't think the delays have had anything to do with ramping up production. It was about getting design feedback, refining the design, and gathering support. These are all necessary steps to getting this type of product off the ground.
