Its unlikely to be a meager amount. Years away from development could be a good argument to start now (if it took days we could use it a strategic reserve leaving it in the ground, if it takes years, it better to actually take it out).

but the oil companies and conservative toadies want us to believe the gasoline prices will come down next week

So the weakest argument for the side you oppose is wrong. So what? Who cares? Its not quite bashing a straw man (because there are some who actually make or at least imply such an argument), but its not very useful.

Drilling probably won't bring prices down quickly, and almost certainly won't do so to any significant extent. But it will bring prices down years from now. If we had allowed drilling ten years ago, we would have lower prices now. I'm not saying it would be a lot lower, but we would be using a valuable resource rather than letting it go to waste. If I see a couple of hundred dollar bills on the ground, picking them up won't change my net worth much, but its probably worthwhile doing it. If I could get a one quarter of a percent additional raise, I'd hardly turn it down, just because it would not go far in terms of paying my mortgage.

If you want to debate peak oil, "bring it on".....

I've debated it before, but its less interesting than some other debates because I don't have any strong view. I could discuss the issue, but discussions with someone with a strong view tend to turn in to a debate rather than a balanced discussion from both sides. Then it becomes me debating uncertainty vs. the other side who thinks they have all the answers. That's worthwhile doing sometimes, but I'm not actively looking for such a debate.

Also to the extent we are at or past peak oil, or that it is coming soon and will have a fast drop off, then we have even more reason to exploit the oil we do have. The rarer oil is the more valuable each drop of it is.
