Here is an interesting chart on this topic that I found in my inbox this morning:

http://www.businessinsider.com/chart-of-the-day-sp-500-announced-buybacks-2011-5?utm_source=Triggermail&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Clusterstock%20Chart%20Of%20The%20Day&utm_campaign=Clusterstock_COTD_051311

I am supposed to be outside working in the yard and found this chart but can't put much thought in to it. I did a quick search and found the S&P Tot Market Cap to be ~$13T in Sept 2008. Which implies that companies have purchased somewhere ~3% of their total shares.
