US net oil imports have been dropping in the last few years. Part of it is the recession, but part is better car mileage and high oil prices as well as the uptick in US production. Hopefully shale oil/gas and the new car mileage standards will keep the trend going.

Net oil imports peaked in 2007 at around 13 million barrels per day. They are now 9 million barrels per day, a 30% drop. The US now imports at the same levels as during the late nineties.

By a vote of 42 to 57, the Senate on Wednesday voted down a Republican bill designed to expand offshore oil drilling by requiring the Obama administration to speed up decisions on drilling permits.

The bill also mandated that the government conduct lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia that were suspended after the BP oil spill.
