Why would non-residents think we are all the same here?

Because unrepresentative extremes make a much larger caricature target for people to throw things at when they feel the urge.

Jim,

You are preaching to the choir. I understand and agree with you.

Plenty of Florida crackers actually scare me living around here in Tampa. I guess, the product of the dismal Florida education system.

Back to San Diego for a minute....

San Diego is in my opinion probably one the most educated places on earth per capita. One of the things we miss living in Florida are the universities and opportunities. Sharon get's a lot of respect for a having a BS degree in Operations Research from UCSD and in my opinion, one of the top universities in the world.

Michael

Jim-

I'm coming to your area to spend a few nights at L'auberge in Del Mar. Then we're headed up to Ojai for more shits and giggles before our last stop at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica.

With the current ocean temperature, there, at 61 degrees there won't be any swimming except in heated pool. What a difference from Naples where the Gulf is already 85 degrees.

"In my personal experience, people in the rural south are much more disconnected from reality than most of the nation....."

What we have here is a classical fallacy of logic know as arguing from the specific to the general. Apparently you narrow experience in the south gives you little qualification for making general conclusions about the people of the region.

I was reared and educated in the deep south, but lived and worked in other states and four foreign countries. I chose after retiring to reside in the deep south where my family, friends and acquaintances are most certainly not disconnected from reality.

In fact I tend to being grossly insulted by your remark and would be so if I were not aware of your apparent narrow mind.

If you would like to discuss this further over a drink the next time you are in my vicinity, please let me know.
