One would have to know more about the cost model of the car...for instance, generally a PL will amortize development and manufacturing start up costs over a five year period..I suspect that for a car like the Volt that cost is much larger than it is for a standard gas car...the prius for instance was not profitable for a number of years after introduction. To some degree first run of production products are more expensive particularly in a corporate culture where loss leaders are hard to justify...after its financial debacle gm is likely to be under such a rigid financial culture.
