BDAZZ -- The processor is, of course, a better example, since baseband chips are now in the iPhone. But the iPhone uses a less expensive, less sophisticated chip compared with other chips QCOM has designed. Similarly, there are a lot of QCOM low end chips going into devices used in developing countries.

I'm looking at market penetration, especially for the higher end chips, whether baseband or processor. I also acknowledge that QCOM now has more than 50% of the market for WCDMA chips.

Intel in its fastest growth period in the 1990s always had a lock on the premium priced microprocessors, leaving competitors like AMD with the lower end, lower profit chips. I thought that by this time QCOM would have had a stronger position at the high end. I guess I'll just have to wait.
