It isn't an ad hominem to point out that Cato has an agenda and isn't shy of distorting things to promote it. I wouldn't reference a left-leaning think tank to make a political point unless I double checked their data because their conclusions are rightly suspect.

Yes there is. Their students are expected to function in the real world, not some artificial construct. And shutting out those who economically disadvantage not only locks them into their economic status, it also effects their peers. If they don't know of anyone who has gone to college, they have no idea what it is like, other than it isn't for people like them. Else they would know someone who had gone. These sort of connections are important for humans, unlike the theoretical constructs you delight in.
