steve - You may be missing my point. The managability winners
won because of their proprietary offerings. Proprietary
hooks only work well only in a homogeneous environment. Do you
think Compaq's chassis intrusion alert will work on a HP
system? No. Is it part of DMI 2.0? No. Dell only offers
solutions that are predicated on open standards guaranteeing
full functionality and predictability in a hertogeneous enterprise.

Dell has resisted proprietary offerings for just this reason.
The standards are evolving a little too slowly however and
I believe Dell is caving in and you might see a slight departure
from their strategy in the next batch of products.

By the way, mule PC's don't interest me much.

steve - your misinforming everyone again.. your statement " but the management tool is part of the O/S not the hardware. It does the works regardless of the pc." is absolutely incorrect. Only simple
management tasks like software upgrades/config info can be performed regardless of the PC. To take advantage of advanced manageability functions, hardware must be DMI compliant. Beyond that, things like thermal monitoring, component lock-out, chassis intrusion etc. require
special hardware and propritery software hooks.

There is a broad spectrum of capabilities and offerings within a
still evolving standard. Vendors offer a combination of this
that and the other to provide a so called total solution.
If you buy someone's proprietary offering, there's little
guarantee it's specialized functionality will become a standard.

So be clear. I assume it's not what you MEANT to say and you were referring to managewise only, but it can easily be construed as FACT by someone who doesn't understand this stuff.
